Can Adderall Cause Acne? Long Term Effects of Adderall

Written by Stryx — November 25, 2020

Is it possible that Adderall can cause acne? There are some speculations that this could be the case. While there isn't conclusive evidence at the moment that Adderall plays a direct role in breakouts, the link between Adderall and acne is still being investigated since people have reported pimples and zits after taking Adderall.

As one of the leading providers for male skincare tips, tricks, and products, Stryx strongly believes in helping our readers maintain healthy and vibrant skin. That's why we're going to answer any questions you might have about Adderall and acne. Let's get started!

Adderall and Acne

Hormonal fluctuations in the body can result in acne, which is why most people experience it during puberty. However, it can also happen as a result of taking certain medications, which is why substances that increase or decrease your testosterone levels can result in breakouts. When it comes to taking Adderall, the science isn’t as clear.

What is Adderall?

Adderall is a medication consisting of a chemical mixture of amphetamine and dextroamphetamine. It’s used by millions of people in the United States alone to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Various dosages are available, and the only way to use it is to have it prescribed by your doctor.

How Does Adderall Work?

Amphetamine and dextroamphetamine are classified as stimulants. When you take them, levels of serotonin in the brain increase, triggering a sensation of euphoria and alertness. As such, Adderall is often prescribed to individuals with ADHD, a condition that typically results in excessive fidgeting, an inability to concentrate, and decreased attention span. Occasionally, Adderall is prescribed to people with narcolepsy to help them remain awake during the day.

Does Adderall Cause Acne?

As of right now, there’s no conclusive proof showing Adderall is linked to acne in any way. Adderall is often prescribed to children and teenagers because they are most often the ones diagnosed with ADHD. They also happen to be more prone to developing acne in general due to hormonal fluctuations caused by puberty. As such, the link could be correlation and not causation.

It’s the same inconclusive link that exists between whey protein and acne. The substance is often taken by people who work out and sweat excessively, and if you don’t wash properly after sweating, then you’re more likely to have a breakout. The issue with many scientific studies trying to link Adderall with acne is that the skin problem is more prone to happen in the demographic taking the substance.

Can Adderall Cause Skin Problems?

The only skin problems that should arise out of taking Adderall are caused by an allergic reaction. Some of the skin issues you may notice after taking Adderall include:

  • Blisters
  • Rashes
  • Hives

If you notice any complications, then talk to your doctor. Other medications are available that may not result in the same problems.

What are Common Side Effects of Adderall

A litany of side effects is possible from taking Adderall with some of the most common including stomachaches, nervousness, and a decreased appetite. Additional side effects that are typically reported by individuals of all ages include:

  • Fatigue
  • Insomnia
  • Weight loss
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Mood swings
  • Abdominal pain
  • Fever

More serious side effects are possible although they are rarer. These can include hypertension, cardiovascular issues, seizures, and vision issues. If you notice any complications, then you should bring them up to your doctor immediately.

It’s also important to note that Adderall can result in withdrawal symptoms, such as slow thought processes and unpleasant dreams. In the event your doctor recommends getting off the medication, you may need to taper yourself off.

How to Treat Your Acne

Regardless of what’s causing your acne, there are ways to get it under control. You can look for over-the-counter acne treatments at your local pharmacy or even try at-home remedies, such as spot treating with tea tree oil. For more severe cases of pimples, you should speak with your dermatologist about taking antibiotics or a cream or lotion to help lower your skin’s production of oil.

For more immediate relief, you can apply a concealer tool over the affected area. It quickly covers any and all imperfections from dark circles under the eyes to zits. With help from Stryx, you can look and feel your best.
