What Causes Acne Around the Mouth?

Acne around the mouth might develop because of constant pressure around the mouth. For example, if you’re using a cellphone, pressing the cell phone near your lips can block the pores in that area.
Hormones
Hormones can stimulate the production of sebum, which can clog pores and lead to an outbreak of acne. This is especially prevalent durings hormonal fluctuations such as those found during puberty.
If your body is producing too much oil, it’s possible that the oil is being produced within the T-zone, an area where more oil glands are prevalent. One area that’s covered by the T-zone to an extent is the mouth.
Therefore, one reason you might be breaking out with acne around the mouth is that your hormones might have caused a spike in oil production, which would in turn lead to an increase in oil production around the T-zone.
Holding Your Phone Against Your Face
Believe it or not, consistently using a phone can contribute to some level of acne around the mouth. This is due to the fact that a dirty cellphone can contain tons of bacteria which can then transfer over to your skin.
This goes for other things which might come into contact with your face such as a helmet strap, pillowcases, and makeup brushes.
Another reason holding phones against your face may cause acne is that the phone might block the pores which could then cause a breakout.
To keep your phone from causing your next potential breakout, we recommend using antibacterial wipes at least once a day to wipe off any potential bacteria that might be stuck to your phone.
Helmet Straps
As we’ve mentioned above, helmet straps can be a deadly source for chin acne to pop up. Not only are helmet straps able to transfer bacteria to your skin, having a helmet strap strapped on too tight can clog your pores.
We recommend keeping your helmet straps somewhat loose around the chin so that the chance of clogged pores goes down. You can also use a cleanser to cleanse your chin and face after you’re done using the helmet so you can ensure that your pores are clean and healthy.

The best way to deal with acne around the mouth is to keep it from popping up in the first place. Here are some of the best ways to prevent acne around the mouth.
Shower After You Exercise
Showering after you exercise can help remove any dirt, sweat, or bacteria that may have accumulated during your workout. If you’re not a big fan of showering after exercise, we recommend that at minimum you wash your face.
Avoid Touching Your Face Excessively
Your fingers can accumulate a large amount of oil and these same fingers can also host tons of bacteria and dirts. Touching your face excessively can transfer oil, dirt, and bacteria onto your face which can then clog pores and lead to acne breakouts.
If you find yourself touching your face excessively, we recommend making a mental note everytime you touch your face. That way, you’ll be more aware of this habit and you can eliminate it from your regimen faster.
Use a Cleanser or Facewash Twice a Day
One of our favorite ways to treat acne around the mouth is by using a cleanser or a face wash. Similar to a shower, cleansers and face washes can eliminate dirt, bacteria, and sweat that has built up in your pores.
What’s great about cleansers is that if you find a high-quality product, these cleansers will be able to do a deep clean on your pores without irritating your skin, leaving you feeling both clean and refreshed.
Don’t Pick at Already-Existing Acne
Sometimes, acne will show up, despite our best efforts. However, the best way to deal with already-existing acne is to leave it be. Don’t pick at already-existing acne because this could lead to bigger problems.
Picking at acne only makes things worse and can cause red marks and even permanent scarring. This could eventually ruin your skin’s integrity and severe hyperpigmentation that lasts longer than your initial breakout.
