Does Drinking Water Help Rosacea? Rosacea Skincare

Written by Stryx — September 11, 2020

Let's talk about rosacea today. Rosacea is an issue that we know a lot of people have to deal with on a daily basis. But does drinking water help rosacea?

Drinking water is one of the best ways to help your skin regardless of what’s going on with it. Fine lines, excessive oiliness, and even rosacea can have drastically reduced symptoms by consuming sufficient quantities of water daily. While 16 million Americans currently suffer from rosacea, there’s still no known cure yet. However, with lifestyle changes and other methodologies, you can have radiant skin in no time.

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a common skin condition that results in visible blood vessels appearing around the face. This makes the person appear excessively red. It’s also been known to create red, pus-filled bumps on the skin. While it’s often mistaken for acne surrounding the mouth or on the cheeks, it’s its own separate skin condition that requires unique treatments.

The way to know whether you have rosacea or something else is to look at your specific symptoms. If you have the following, then it means you’ve developed rosacea and likely need to see a dermatologist.

  • Red bumps: Rosacea bumps look remarkably similar to pimples, including that occasionally they contain pus. Additionally, your skin is more tender and feels hotter.
  • Facial redness: Redness tends to develop in the central region of your face. You may also find small blood vessels in your cheeks and nose swelling and becoming more visible.
  • Enlarged nose: Rosacea thickens the nose over time, causing it to appear bulbous. This symptom is more common in men compared with women.
  • Eye issues: Rosacea is often accompanied by dry, swollen eyes as well as swollen eyelids. This is referred to as ocular rosacea. In many cases, eye problems precede any skin issues.

Why Do You Suddenly Have Rosacea?

The precise cause of rosacea is unknown. However, it seems to be caused by various environmental factors. Different factors affect people in unique ways, so it’s important to determine what triggers breakouts in your skin. Some common explanations can include:

  • Certain cosmetic products
  • Exercise
  • Exposure to extreme sunlight or wind
  • Temperature extremes
  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Spicy foods and hot drinks
  • Medications that dilate blood vessels

Rosacea can affect anyone. But it does appear to impact certain populations more than others. You’re more likely to develop rosacea if you’re over the age of 30, have particularly light skin, and have a family history of the condition.

How Do You Clear Up Rosacea?

There may not be a cure for rosacea. But there are ways for your dermatologist to limit the amount of redness that appears on your face via laser therapy and various medications. A dermatologist may recommend laser therapy that targets enlarged blood vessels to make them less noticeable.

You may also be prescribed medication. Topical drugs work best for mild to moderate rosacea. You simply apply a cream that contains ivermectin, metronidazole, or azelaic acid. However, you need to continuously use the cream to continue seeing results. Oral antibiotics and other drugs may also be prescribed for particularly serious cases.

If you’re looking for an instant solution to your rosacea problems, you can use a concealer like the one offered here at Stryx. While it is a short-term solution, concealers can quickly and easily cover any rosacea you may have while you prep for a long-term solution.

It’s also important to make lifestyle choices that promote proper skin health. For example, you should take note of any actions that appear to cause greater redness. If you notice rosacea breakouts every time you eat something spicy, then it would be for the best to avoid those foods in the future. You should also protect your skin every time you go outside by properly applying sunscreen. And naturally, one of the best things you can do for your skin is to drink plenty of water.

Can Drinking Water Help Your Rosacea?

Drinking water can definitely help limit the symptoms of rosacea. However, it may not fix everything, but it can go a long way in reducing redness. Your body is mostly made up of water, and by drinking enough every day, you help flush out toxins on your skin and in your body. These toxins can get trapped in your skin’s pores, which not only increases your chances of heightened rosacea but also for an acne breakout.

For the best results, you should opt for icy cold water. Put some ice cubes in your glass to help cool down your bodily systems. The coldness also decreases the chances of your blood vessels dilating. You should drink plenty of water every day regardless of any skin conditions, but with rosacea, it’s particularly prudent.

How Many Glasses of Water Should You Drink a Day?

It’s commonly accepted that people should drink 8 8-ounce glasses of water every day. This ensures an adequate amount of hydration. You should keep a reusable water bottle handy all day long so that you always have some hydration by your side. It’s also easier to drink from a water bottle, which may hold 32 ounces, rather than constantly going back and forth from the fridge to refill a glass.

You should drink even more water if you consume caffeine or alcohol during the day. Those substances are diuretics, which means they expel water from the body. You actually lose hydration when you have a cup of coffee. It doesn’t mean you have to do away with your morning cup of joe. But you should drink extra water to compensate for what’s been lost.

How to Hide Your Rosacea

It can take a while for treatments to take effect. In the meantime, you can cover up any redness with a simple makeup regimen. First, you need to start with a primer to ensure your makeup stays on all day long. From there, you should pick out a high-quality concealer tool that’s designed to cover up any and all imperfections on your skin.

Lastly, finish with a foundation until you have an even finish. A few simple steps really go a long way in covering up rosacea and any other skin conditions you might have. But if your rosacea gets out of control, then don’t be afraid to talk to your dermatologist about other treatment options. You deserve to have brilliantly clear skin, and it’s attainable with the right routine.
