Do Eggs Cause Acne? Could This Food Cause Breakouts?

Written by Stryx — August 05, 2021

Eggs and bacon are a classic breakfast combo. You probably know that you need to take it easy on the bacon every once in a while, but most people gloss over the eggs.

In an interview with The Cut, Natalie Portman said that eliminating eggs and dairy products from her diet cleared up her blemishes. Is it just an anecdote, or is there a scientific consensus?

Let’s just say there’s a good reason why you should be wary of Chinese tomato egg stir-fries in the future.

Pros and Cons of Eating Eggs

It seems like an article comes out every few months saying eggs are good for you. This is immediately following by a blog saying how they’ll lead to an early death.

Foods impact everyone differently. It’s important to consider your own needs before going overboard on eggs.

Pros

  • Help with weight control
  • Improve fetal development in pregnant women
  • Lower the risk of Alzheimer’s
  • Boost eye and hair health
  • Give you much-needed energy

Cons

  • Increase the bad kind of cholesterol
  • Give your body too much sodium
  • Can give food poisoning if not cooked properly

Can Eggs Cause Acne?

It’s hard to pinpoint whether a food definitively causes acne. Even something like chocolate, which most people assume leads to pimples, has the jury out on it.

Eggs similarly have a cloud of doubt over them. But there is evidence they can make skin blemishes worse.

Why Eggs Might Cause Acne

Eggs contain a number of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that can be beneficial for your skin. Obviously, the best eggs are the organic variety where the chicken wasn’t given any additional hormones.

Hormonal fluctuations can make acne worse. This is why pimples tend to develop during puberty and times of stress.

There are several other explanations for why you may need to cut back on omelets.

Eggs Contain Biotin

Some suspect eggs lead to acne due to the presence of biotin. A lot of people need this nutrient for healthy skin and hair, but there’s a catch.

When you consume a ridiculously high amount of biotin, it can result in an overflow in keratin production in the skin. Left unchecked, this can result in blemishes.

The good news is that eggs don’t contain nearly as much biotin to really impact acne. To get to that point, you would need to take excessive dosages of biotin supplements, like some people take to prevent hair loss.

Unless you’re consuming a carton of eggs every day, you don’t really have to worry about this.

Eggs are Rich With Progesterone

Another material in eggs to watch out for is progesterone. Your body naturally produces this substance, but an extra infusion can throw off your natural hormonal balance.

This problem can become exacerbated if you’re on birth control. Certain medication that’s high in progestin can lead to zits.

Leaky Gut Syndrome

Certain foods can result in a medical condition known as leaky gut syndrome. This is a gastrointestinal issue where toxins in your stomach seep into your bloodstream.

Any inflammations in your body can result in acne. That’s why it’s critical to locate the source of the leaky gut as quickly as possible.

Some of the foods you should consider abstaining from include dairy, soy, corn, gluten, and, of course, eggs.

Final Thoughts

Everyone is different. Whether you believe you’re having issues due to peanuts or eggs, there’s an easy way to get to the bottom of it.

You should try cutting eggs out of your diet if you’re worried about how they’re impacting your skin health. If your skin improves, then you may want to consider making a permanent change.

Overall, you just need to be mindful about eating things like eggs and chocolate in moderation. A little can certainly be beneficial, so don’t be afraid of having yogurt for breakfast every once in a while.
